Glass Panels and Polycarbonate Roofing for Pergolas

t376-31

t376-31

A pergola roof panel installation adds weather protection by fitting glass or polycarbonate sheets onto the pergola frame, sized to the exact opening and supported by the structure. Polycarbonate is lighter and more impact-tolerant, while glass gives a cleaner, more permanent look, and the right choice depends on load, light and the design of your pergola.

Choosing between glass and polycarbonate

Both materials can work well on a pergola, but they behave differently. Polycarbonate is light, handles impact well and lets diffused light through, which suits most residential balconies and gardens. Glass offers a crisp, permanent finish and excellent clarity, but it is heavier and needs a frame designed to carry that weight safely.

  • Polycarbonate: lighter, impact resistant, easier to adapt
  • Glass: clearer look, heavier, requires a stronger frame

We talk through how much light you want, how exposed the spot is to wind, and how the roof will look next to the building.

Measuring the opening on site

Accurate measurement is the foundation of a good pergola roof panel installation. Our team visits the property, checks the existing pergola or the planned structure, and records the span, the slope, the support points and any obstacles such as walls, lights or air conditioning units.

Measurements are taken more than once, because a wall that looks straight is often not. We note how rain will run off the roof so water drains toward the correct side, and we confirm the access needed for installation.

Drawing and written specification

Once the site is measured, we prepare a drawing and a written specification. These show the panel dimensions, the material, the fixing points, the drainage direction and how the panels meet the frame. Nothing is produced until you have reviewed and approved the document.

Where the structure needs checking, the exact load and fixing details are confirmed with the engineer, as the relevant standards require. This step keeps surprises out of the final result.

Production in our Tel Aviv workshop

The frame components are cut, welded and prepared in our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv. Working in the workshop lets us control dimensions carefully and prepare the supports, brackets and sealing details before anything goes on site.

Iron elements are finished with hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, and aluminum profiles are finished to suit the colour you choose. The panels are cut to the measured sizes and checked against the drawing.

Finishing, sealing and drainage details

Good roof panels depend on the small details. Gaskets and seals keep rain out at the joints, and the slope must move water away from the building and the walkway below. Panel edges are finished so they sit firmly without rattling in wind.

  • Correct slope for water run-off
  • Gaskets at every joint and edge
  • Secure, corrosion-protected fixings

Installation on site

On installation day the frame is checked, the supports are fixed, and the panels are lifted and secured one by one. Glass and polycarbonate are handled with care to avoid scratches or cracks, and each panel is checked for alignment and fit before moving on.

After installation we clean the surfaces, check the drainage and walk through how to care for the roof so it keeps performing well over the years.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add glass or polycarbonate to an existing pergola?

Often yes, provided the existing frame is sound and can carry the added weight and wind load. We inspect the structure during the site visit and tell you honestly whether it needs reinforcing first.

Which is better for a pergola roof, glass or polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate suits most homes because it is light and impact tolerant, while glass offers a clearer and more permanent look. The best choice depends on your frame, exposure and how much light you want.

Will the roof leak where the panels meet?

A properly designed roof uses gaskets at the joints and a correct slope so water runs off rather than collecting. Good detailing is the main protection against leaks.

How do I start a pergola roof panel project with you?

Send us photos of the pergola and the spot, and we will arrange an on-site measurement. From there we prepare the drawing and specification for your approval before production begins.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common error is measuring once and assuming walls and frames are square, which leads to panels that do not fit. Another is ignoring the roof slope, so water pools instead of draining away.

Our recommendation

Ask for an on-site measurement and a written drawing before ordering, and confirm the drainage direction and fixing details in writing. Taking these steps early prevents most problems after installation.

Summary

Glass or polycarbonate panels can turn a pergola into a usable weatherproof space when they are measured, designed and installed with care. Planning the slope, seals and frame strength from the start gives the best long-term result.
