Pergola Lighting Installation: Planning Wires and Fixtures
t376-32

Pergola lighting installation works best when cable routes and fixture points are planned before the pergola is manufactured, not after. At Techno Kol Uzi we measure the site, mark the wiring paths inside the metal profiles, and agree on fixture positions in the drawing so that the finished structure is ready for clean, safe lighting.
Why Lighting Must Be Planned Before Production
A metal pergola is built to measure, which gives us a rare advantage: we can plan the electrical path while the frame is still being designed. Hidden routes inside hollow profiles, junction points and fixture mounts are far easier to build in than to add later with surface cables that spoil the look.
Tell us early if you want evening lighting, even if you are not sure yet about the fixtures. A small change in the drawing costs little, while retrofitting usually means opening finished work.
Measuring and Marking the Site
During the on-site visit we measure the pergola area, the height of the beams, the distance to the house wall and the nearest power point. We also check where the switch will sit and whether the cable can reach it without crossing open spaces.
- Location of the existing power outlet or distribution box
- Span and height of each beam and rafter
- Preferred fixture positions and light direction
- Path for the cable from the house to the pergola
Designing Cable Routes and Fixture Points
We draw the cable route as part of the written specification. Profiles that will carry wiring get internal channels or sleeves, and every joint and bend is noted so that the cable is never pinched or stressed. Fixture mounts are welded or fitted where the light will sit, so the lamp is secure and easy to service.
All electrical connection work is carried out by a licensed electrician. Our role is to make sure the metalwork gives the electrician clean, accessible routes.
Production in the Workshop
Once you approve the drawing, we cut and assemble the iron or aluminum pergola in our Tel Aviv factory. Wiring channels are prepared before finishing, so they are protected by the same coating as the rest of the structure. Fixture seats are checked for fit against the actual lamps you have chosen, to avoid surprises on site.
Iron pergolas receive hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating; aluminum pergolas are finished to suit the project. Both finishes are applied before the electrical components are installed.
Installation and Electrical Connection
On installation day the pergola is set in place and fixed to the wall or posts. The electrician then pulls the cable through the prepared channels, connects the fixtures and tests the circuit. We recommend checking the finished work with the electrician for compliance with current Israeli electrical requirements before use.
Keep the switch and any control box in a position you can reach easily, and label the circuit at the distribution board.
Maintenance and Long-Term Care
Outdoor fixtures need weather-rated components and occasional checks. Look at seals around lamp housings, check connectors after storms and clean fixtures so they keep their brightness. Because the wiring runs inside the frame, access panels or removable covers should be planned where service may be needed.
If you plan to change fixtures later, mention it at the design stage so the mounts and cable capacity can match the new lights.
Frequently asked questions
Can lighting be added to a pergola that is already installed?
It is possible, but harder, because cables may have to run on the surface or through cut openings. Planning the route before production gives a cleaner result.
Who connects the electrical wiring?
A licensed electrician should carry out all electrical connections. We prepare the metalwork and cable routes so the electrician can work safely and neatly.
Do we need to decide on the fixtures before the pergola is made?
Not necessarily, but knowing the approximate type and size helps us design the mounts. We can keep the mounts adaptable if you are still choosing.
Will the cable be visible?
Where possible, cables run inside the hollow profiles and are not visible. The exact route is agreed in the drawing before production.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is deciding on lighting after the pergola is finished, which forces surface cables or cutting into completed work. Another is placing the switch or power point where it is hard to reach.
Our recommendation
Mark the lights, switch and power point on a simple sketch during the first site visit, and share it with us before we start the drawing. This small step saves the most time and avoids rework.
Summary
Good pergola lighting installation starts with measuring, cable planning and fixture points built into the metal design from the beginning.
