Laminated Glass Railing Manufacturing: The Steps

t348-16

t348-16

Laminated glass railing manufacturing starts with an on-site measurement and a written specification, then moves through cutting, edge work, bonding two or more glass layers with an interlayer, and finishing the metal hardware before installation. Each step is checked so the finished panels fit the balcony and meet the safety requirements that apply to railings.

Step 1: Inquiry and On-Site Measurement

Every laminated glass railing begins with an inquiry, ideally with photos of the balcony or stair and the surrounding structure. A technician then visits the site to measure the opening, the slab or floor level, the height above the finished surface, and the fixing points. Measurements are taken at several places because walls and slabs are rarely perfectly straight.

Notes are made on the type of fixing available, such as top-mounted channels, side posts or base shoes, since this affects the glass edge and the thickness needed.

Step 2: Drawing and Written Specification

From the measurements, a drawing is prepared showing panel sizes, joint positions, handrail type and fixing details. A written specification lists the glass build-up, interlayer type, edge finish and hardware finish. The client reviews and approves it before any glass is ordered.

  • Overall panel dimensions and tolerances
  • Glass make-up and number of layers
  • Edge work and hardware finish
  • Installation method and sequence

Step 3: Glass Cutting and Edge Preparation

Once approved, the glass sheets are cut to the drawing dimensions. Cutting is followed by edge grinding, which removes sharp corners and prepares the edges for the chosen finish, whether polished or seamed. Clean edges are important because chips weaken the glass and can cause stress points.

Each panel is labelled with its position on the drawing so that the site team can match it correctly during installation.

Step 4: Lamination and Bonding

Lamination bonds two or more glass layers with a plastic interlayer, usually PVB or a similar material, under heat and pressure. The interlayer holds fragments together if the glass is broken, which is the main safety reason for choosing laminated glass on a railing.

The panels are then left to cure and are inspected for bubbles, haze or misalignment. Any panel that does not meet the specification is set aside rather than delivered.

Step 5: Finishing the Metal Hardware and Quality Check

The metal parts, such as handrails, posts, channels and brackets, are cut, welded or assembled and then finished. Depending on the specification, parts may be hot-dip galvanized or powder coated for corrosion protection, which is especially important for outdoor balconies near the sea.

Before packing, the glass and hardware are checked against the drawing, and fixings are prepared so the site crew can work efficiently.

Step 6: Installation and Final Checks

On site, posts and channels are fixed first, then the glass panels are set into them and secured with the specified gaskets, shims and fixings. Handrails are aligned and tightened. The installer checks level, plumb and joint spacing, and confirms that the railing height and fixing design match the approved drawing.

For the railing's structural performance, the design should be checked with the engineer against the applicable Israeli railing standard (SI 1142); exact values are confirmed at the design stage rather than assumed.

Frequently asked questions

Why is laminated glass used for balcony railings?

Laminated glass keeps its layers bonded by an interlayer when broken, so fragments stay in place rather than falling. This makes it a common choice for railings where safety is important.

How long does the manufacturing process take?

Timing depends on the size of the project, the glass build-up and the finish chosen. Your project lead will give you a schedule once the specification is approved.

Do I need to provide measurements myself?

You can send photos and rough dimensions to start the inquiry, but the final measurements are taken on site by our technician to ensure accuracy.

Can the glass railing be fitted to an existing balcony?

In many cases yes, provided the slab, wall or base can accept the fixings. The site visit determines the best fixing method for your structure.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is ordering glass from rough measurements taken before the finishing work, which leads to panels that do not fit. Another is choosing a fixing method without checking whether the slab or wall can take the load.

Our recommendation

Measure after the surrounding finishes are complete and agree the drawing and specification in writing before glass is ordered. This simple step prevents most fitting problems.

Summary

Laminated glass railings are made through a clear sequence of measurement, drawing, cutting, lamination, finishing and installation, and each step protects safety and fit.
