Quality Checks During Glass Railing Production

t348-17

t348-17

Glass railing quality control covers every stage: verified site measurements, approved drawings, inspected glass and hardware, controlled fabrication and finishing, and a final check after installation. Each step is documented so that the finished railing matches the specification and can be reviewed by an inspector.

Verifying Measurements on Site

Every glass railing starts with an on-site measurement. Our team checks the length of each run, the height from the finished floor or stair nosing, the wall or slab condition, and any corners, steps or openings that affect the layout. Measurements are taken at more than one point, because floors and walls are rarely perfectly level or straight.

  • Length of each section and total run
  • Height from finished surface
  • Fixing surface type and condition
  • Obstacles, corners and transitions

Recorded values are compared against the drawing before production begins.

Drawing and Specification Review

Once measurements are confirmed, we prepare a drawing and a written specification. The specification lists the glass type and thickness, the handrail profile, the fixing method, the hardware and the finish. The client, and where relevant the engineer or architect, approves these documents in writing. Any change after approval is recorded as a revision so the production file always matches what was agreed.

Inspecting Glass and Components

Incoming materials are checked before they reach the workshop. Glass panels are inspected for edge condition, surface defects, correct thickness and tempering marks. Stainless steel or aluminum profiles are checked for dimensions, straightness and surface damage. Fixings, clamps and base shoes are verified against the specification so that no substitute parts enter production.

Damaged or non-conforming items are set aside and not used.

Controlled Fabrication

During fabrication, each railing is cut, drilled and assembled according to its drawing. Drilling positions and edge finishing are checked with templates and measuring tools. Posts and handrails are checked for alignment and squareness before the glass is fitted. Where a railing includes a handrail on glass, the fixing points are verified for spacing and levelness, since small deviations become visible once the panels are installed.

Each production batch is traceable to its drawing and specification.

Finishing and Surface Checks

Metal components are finished by hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, depending on the specification and the environment. After finishing, we inspect the surface for coating thickness, uniform color, runs, bubbles and damage from handling. Stainless steel parts are checked for surface finish and any discoloration. Components that fail the visual check are reworked or replaced before packing.

Installation and Final Inspection

On site, the railing is fixed according to the approved method and checked for plumbness, level and alignment. Fixings are tested for tightness, and glass is confirmed to sit correctly in its channels or clamps without contact against hard surfaces. The completed railing is compared against the drawing and specification, and any deviations are noted. Where requirements apply, such as the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, the final loads and heights are confirmed with the responsible engineer, and exact values are checked against the project documents.

Frequently asked questions

What is checked first in glass railing quality control?

The first check is the on-site measurement, including length, height and the condition of the fixing surface. These values are compared with the approved drawing before any material is cut.

Who approves the railing specification?

The client approves the drawing and written specification, and where relevant the engineer or architect also signs off. Any later change is recorded as a revision.

How are glass panels checked for defects?

Glass is inspected for edge condition, surface defects, correct thickness and tempering marks before fabrication. Damaged or non-conforming panels are set aside.

Does the railing get checked after installation?

Yes, the installed railing is checked for plumbness, level, fixing tightness and glass alignment, then compared with the drawing and specification. Any deviations are recorded.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is relying on a single measurement taken at one point, which misses floor or wall irregularities. Skipping the written specification approval can also lead to disputes over glass type or finish.

Our recommendation

Ask for the drawing, the specification and the measurement record before production starts, and keep them together for inspection. Confirm load and height requirements with your engineer rather than relying on general assumptions.

Summary

Glass railing quality control depends on verified measurements, approved documents, inspected materials, controlled fabrication, finishing checks and a final installation inspection. Documenting each stage makes the finished railing easy to review against the standard.
