Solar Powered Gate Installation: Our Off-Grid Setup Process
t292-44

A solar powered gate installation uses a solar panel, a battery and a charge controller to run an electric gate operator without a mains connection. Our process starts with an on-site measurement of the gate weight, travel and daily use, then a written plan that sizes the panel and battery to match.
Step 1: Site Visit and Measurement
Every off-grid project begins with a visit to your property. We measure the gate opening, the travel path for sliding gates or the swing arc for swing gates, and the total weight of the leaf. We also check the spot where the panel will face the sun, since shade from trees, walls or neighbouring buildings changes how much energy you will get.
- Gate width, height and weight
- Sun exposure and shading during the day
- Expected number of openings per day
- Position for the panel mount and battery box
Step 2: Planning the Energy Budget
We turn the measurements into a simple energy budget. The motor draws power each time the gate moves, so the number of daily cycles matters more than the gate size alone. From this we choose a panel and battery that can run the gate through cloudy days, not only sunny ones. You receive a written specification that lists each component and why it was chosen, and you approve it before we start production.
Step 3: Drawing and Specification
Our drawing shows the gate frame, the motor position, the panel bracket and the cable route from the panel to the controller. The specification covers materials, finishing and the mounting method. Structural and safety details, including railing and fence requirements under the Israeli standard SI 1142, are checked with the engineer, so exact values are confirmed for your project rather than assumed.
Step 4: Production in Our Factory
Once you approve the plan, the gate leaf, brackets and panel frame are cut and welded in our Tel Aviv workshop on Rival Street. Steel parts are hot-dip galvanized and then powder coated, which protects them from weather and salt air. Building the parts in the factory means fewer surprises on site and a tighter fit for the motor and panel mounts.
Step 5: On-Site Installation
Our installers fix the gate posts, mount the operator and attach the solar panel at the angle planned during the visit. The battery box is placed in a sheltered, ventilated spot, and the charge controller is wired and tested. We run the gate through its full cycle several times and check that the battery charges correctly during the day.
Step 6: Handover and Checks
At handover we show you how the controller displays battery level and how to read it. We explain what to do during long stretches of cloudy weather, such as reducing unnecessary openings. We also go over routine checks: cleaning the panel, keeping the hinges and rails lubricated, and checking the battery terminals every few months.
Frequently asked questions
Can a solar powered gate work in cloudy winter weather?
Yes, if the battery and panel are sized for your daily openings and your local sun conditions. We plan for reduced sunlight so the gate keeps working during a few overcast days.
How much sun does the panel need?
The panel needs a clear, south-facing or well-lit position for most of the day. We check shading during the site visit and tell you if a different mounting spot is needed.
Can I add solar power to an existing electric gate?
In many cases yes, but the motor, battery and controller must be compatible. We assess your current gate during the measurement visit and advise whether an upgrade makes sense.
How often does the battery need replacing?
Battery life depends on use, climate and maintenance. We recommend regular checks of the battery level and terminals and will advise you on replacement timing at handover.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing a panel and battery based only on gate size, without counting daily openings or checking shade on the panel. Both factors can leave the gate without power on overcast days.
Our recommendation
Ask for a written energy plan before production starts, and make sure the mounting spot for the panel gets full sun for most of the day. A small amount of planning at the start prevents the most common off-grid problems.
Summary
Solar powered gate installation works well when the energy budget, panel position and gate mechanics are planned together. Our measured, step-by-step process covers each stage from the first visit to handover.
