Swing Gate Clearance: Inward or Outward Opening Explained

t292-4

t292-4

A swing gate should open inward when the driveway in front of it is short or the street is busy, because the leaves stay within your property. Outward opening suits wide driveways where the leaves can swing over the boundary without blocking a sidewalk or road, provided the clearance allows it.

Why the opening direction matters

The direction a swing gate opens decides how much free space it needs on each side. A gate that swings toward the street can strike a parked car or block a pedestrian, while one that swings into the yard may need room for a vehicle to pull in first. Before choosing, look at the full width of the entrance, the slope of the driveway and what sits behind the gate when it opens.

Our team checks these points during the on-site measurement, so the decision is based on your actual space rather than a general rule.

Measuring the clearance on site

We measure the clear width of the opening, the depth of the driveway, the position of the posts and any obstacles such as lamp posts, water meters, trees or parked cars. We also note where the leaves will land in both directions, including the arc each leaf sweeps.

  • Clear opening width between posts
  • Free depth in front of and behind the gate
  • Ground level, slope and drainage
  • Arc of each leaf in open and closed positions

Inward or outward: how to choose

Inward opening is often the practical choice for private homes with limited street frontage, since the gate and its hinges stay inside the plot and the sidewalk stays clear. It does require enough space behind the gate for the leaves to fold back without hitting a car you have parked inside.

Outward opening can work well on wide, straight driveways where the leaves can swing out without crossing the property line or a public path. It is less suitable where people walk close to the gate or where the street is narrow.

Drawing and written specification

After measuring, we prepare a drawing that shows the gate in both open and closed positions, with the swing arc marked against your driveway and boundary. The written specification lists the leaf sizes, hinge positions, the chosen opening direction and any fixtures we recommend for the posts.

You review and approve the drawing before anything goes into production, so you can confirm the clearance matches what you expect.

Production and finishing in the factory

Once approved, the gate is manufactured in our Tel Aviv factory to your measurements. Steel parts are typically finished with hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion protection and then powder coated in the colour you choose. Hinges and mounting brackets are fitted so the leaves can be adjusted accurately on site.

For electric swing gates, the motor position and cable routing are planned at this stage so the installer has what is needed on the day.

Installation and final checks

On installation day, we set the posts, hang the leaves and check that they clear the driveway, walls and any nearby objects through their full travel. For electric gates we test the motors, limit switches and safety sensors, and confirm the gate stops and reverses safely when it meets an obstacle.

Any railing or edge protection is checked against the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, and exact dimensional values are confirmed with the engineer.

Frequently asked questions

Is inward opening always safer than outward opening?

Not always. Inward opening keeps the leaves off the street, which helps with pedestrians and traffic, but it needs free space inside the plot. The safer choice depends on your layout.

Can a swing gate open both ways?

Some gates can be designed to swing in either direction, but the hinge arrangement and stops must be planned for it. We confirm this during the measurement stage.

What if my driveway is on a slope?

A slope affects how the leaves sit and how the gate closes. We take ground levels during measurement so the gate clears the surface and operates smoothly.

Do I need a drawing before production?

Yes. We prepare a drawing and written specification showing the swing arc, and production starts only after you approve it.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing the opening direction by eye without measuring the arc of each leaf is the most common error. Forgetting parked cars, lamp posts or sidewalk paths often causes clearance problems after installation.

Our recommendation

Measure the full swing arc with a tape or string before deciding, and keep at least a comfortable margin behind the gate for a car to stop without blocking the leaves. If in doubt, ask for an on-site measurement and a drawing first.

Summary

Opening direction should follow the space you actually have: inward for tight frontage and busy streets, outward only where the arc is clear. Measure first, approve the drawing, then build.
