Cantilever vs Track Sliding Gate: Which Design Fits Your Driveway?
t292-6

A cantilever sliding gate is supported on one side by a wheeled carriage, so it needs no ground track and keeps the driveway clear. A track sliding gate runs on a rail set into or on the ground, which suits uneven or narrow sites but needs regular cleaning of the groove.
Understanding the Two Mechanisms
Both designs slide sideways to open, but they carry the weight differently. A cantilever gate is held by a sturdy post and a top-mounted carriage, so the bottom edge floats above the ground with nothing blocking the path. A track gate rests on a steel rail and rollers that guide it along a fixed line.
Knowing this difference helps you judge how each option will behave in daily use, especially where snow, sand or debris could collect.
Measuring Your Opening First
Accurate measurement comes before any design decision. Our team visits the site, records the clear opening width, the slope of the ground and the position of posts, walls and utility lines. We also check whether there is room behind the gate for it to travel fully open.
- Clear width of the entrance
- Ground level and slope
- Space needed for the gate to slide
- Position of the power supply and cabling
Planning the Design and Specification
Once measurements are confirmed, we prepare a drawing and a written specification covering the frame profile, infill, motor type and finish. For cantilever designs we confirm the post and foundation requirements. For track designs we plan the rail, drainage and cover.
Structural details, including loads and fixings, are checked with the engineer before production begins. Exact values are confirmed at that stage rather than assumed from general guidance.
Client Approval and Production
You receive the drawing and specification for review. Changes are easier to make at this stage than after cutting begins. Once approved, the gate is fabricated in our Tel Aviv factory on Rival Street, where we work iron, aluminum and steel to measure, as we have since 1945.
Components are cut, welded and assembled on the bench so the fit can be checked before anything is taken to site.
Finishing for Long-Term Protection
Gate surfaces face sun, rain and salty air, so finishing matters. Steel parts are typically hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance and then powder coated in the colour you choose. Galvanizing protects the metal underneath, while the coating gives a clean, consistent look.
Ask about the finish early so the drive motor, hinges and rollers are chosen to suit the same environment.
Installation and Handover
Installation begins with the foundation or rail, followed by hanging the gate and fitting the motor, safety sensors and controls. For track gates the groove is levelled and drained. For cantilever gates the carriage and posts are aligned so the gate runs straight without binding.
- Test the full travel in both directions
- Confirm the safety reversal sensors work
- Walk through the controls with you
Frequently asked questions
Is a cantilever gate better than a track gate?
Neither is better in every case. Cantilever gates suit sites where a clear ground path matters, while track gates can work well on level, sheltered entrances.
Do track gates need more maintenance?
Yes, the track needs to be kept clear of sand, leaves and stones so the rollers run smoothly. Cantilever gates avoid this ground groove.
Can both designs be automated?
Yes, both can be fitted with an electric drive. The choice of motor depends on the gate weight and how often it is used.
How do I start the process?
Send us photos of the entrance and a short description of the opening. We will arrange an on-site measurement and then prepare a drawing.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing a design before measuring the site and the ground, or ignoring drainage for a track gate, often leads to later problems. Always confirm clearances and levels first.
Our recommendation
If the driveway is sloped or sandy, a cantilever gate is usually the more reliable choice. Have the site measured before you decide, so the recommendation matches your actual entrance.
Summary
Cantilever gates keep the ground clear and suit difficult sites, while track gates are simpler on level ground but need regular upkeep. Measurement and planning decide which one fits your entrance.
