Spiral Steel Staircases for Rooftops and Mezzanine Access
t482-9

A spiral steel staircase is a compact, self-supporting stair that climbs in a tight circular footprint, making it ideal for rooftops, mezzanines and lofts where a straight staircase will not fit. Techno Kol Uzi manufactures these staircases to measure in our Tel Aviv factory, with a custom steel frame sized to your floor-to-floor height and available space.
Why choose a spiral staircase for compact access
When floor space is limited, a straight staircase can take up a large part of a room or terrace. A spiral steel staircase uses a small circular footprint, so it keeps more usable area for furniture, planting or walking space. It is a practical choice for reaching a rooftop, a storage mezzanine or a loft bedroom.
Because the structure is built around a central column, the staircase carries its own weight and does not need heavy supporting walls. This makes it suitable for lightweight floors and for retrofitting into existing buildings.
Where spiral steel stairs work best
Spiral staircases suit specific situations. They are most often used for:
- Access from a terrace or flat roof to a rooftop room or pergola area
- Mezzanine floors in workshops, shops and homes
- Secondary or occasional access, not the main stair of a busy building
- Connecting a loft to a lower floor where a straight run cannot fit
For main escape routes in multi-storey buildings, the stair must meet the local planning and fire requirements, so confirm the use with your engineer before design.
How we design the steel frame
Each staircase starts with on-site measurement of the floor-to-floor height, the diameter available and the opening in the upper floor. From these figures we draft the central column, the step geometry and the handrail layout. The steel frame is designed to be stable and rigid, so that the staircase feels solid when used.
We discuss the load expected, the finish you want and how the stair will be fixed to the structure. The final drawing and written specification are sent to you for approval before production begins.
Materials and finishing
Our spiral staircases are made from structural steel. After fabrication, the steel is finished to resist weather and wear, which matters for rooftops exposed to sun, rain and salt air. Common finishes include hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating, and the colour can be matched to your railings, gates or pergola.
Treads can be chosen to suit the look and use, such as solid steel, perforated surfaces or other infill to match the design of the space.
Safety and handrails
Safe use depends on the step depth at the narrow end, the headroom, and a well placed handrail. Handrails and guarding should follow the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 in general terms, and the exact values for your project are checked with the engineer during design rather than assumed.
Plan good lighting at the top and bottom and make sure the opening at the upper level is protected where people could step off the edge.
Our process from inquiry to installation
Working with Techno Kol Uzi usually follows a clear path. You send an inquiry with photos of the space, we arrange a site visit to measure, and we prepare a drawing and written specification. Once you approve it, the staircase is fabricated in our factory at Rival Street 37 in Tel Aviv, finished, and then installed on site.
Because we have manufactured steel works since 1945, we can advise on what suits your building as well as how it is made.
Frequently asked questions
Is a spiral steel staircase safe to use every day?
Yes, when it is properly designed, with adequate step depth, headroom and handrails. It is generally best for occasional or secondary access rather than a main staircase in a busy building.
Can a spiral staircase be fitted to an existing roof or mezzanine?
In many cases yes, since the steel frame is self-supporting. The floor structure and opening must be checked on site, and we measure before any design is made.
Do you make spiral staircases to measure?
Yes. Every staircase is made to measure in our Tel Aviv factory, sized to your height, diameter and the look you want.
How do I start a project with Techno Kol Uzi?
Send us an inquiry with photos and the approximate dimensions. We will arrange an on-site measurement and then prepare a drawing and specification for your approval.
Common mistakes to avoid
A common mistake is choosing a spiral stair without checking headroom and step depth at the narrow end, which can make it uncomfortable or unsafe. Another is ordering before measuring the actual opening and floor structure on site.
Our recommendation
Measure the floor-to-floor height and the available diameter carefully, and have an engineer confirm the load and handrail details before production. Choose a galvanized and powder-coated finish if the stair will sit outdoors on a rooftop.
Summary
A spiral steel staircase is a compact, practical solution for rooftop and mezzanine access when space is tight. Built to measure with a careful design, it gives safe and lasting access.
