Coordinating Gate Installation with Fence and Wall Works
t278-47

Gate, fence and wall works should be coordinated by fixing the gate line and post positions first, then building the wall and fence around them with agreed tolerances. The gate is measured and drawn after the openings are set, but its posts and hinge anchors are placed before final finishes.
Why the Sequence Matters
A gate is only as good as the opening it hangs in. When the wall is built before the gate is measured, small errors in height, width or plumb add up and the leaf may drag, rub or fail to close. When the fence is finished before the gate posts are set, the posts end up in the wrong place or the fence has to be cut and patched.
The goal is one agreed sequence that every trade follows, so the gate, the fence and the wall meet cleanly at the opening.
Step 1: Fix the Gate Line Before Any Masonry
Before the blockwork or concrete starts, mark the exact gate line, the opening width and the post positions on site. Agree which side the gate swings and where the automation box or electric lock will sit. Record these decisions in writing and share them with the wall builder and the fence installer.
- Confirm the clear opening width and height
- Mark post centers and anchor positions
- Plan cable routes for automation before the wall closes
Step 2: Measure On Site and Draw the Gate
Once the opening is roughed in, our team measures on site. We check the actual opening at top, middle and bottom, because walls are rarely perfectly square or level. Each measurement goes onto a drawing with a short written specification covering the leaf size, frame profile, infill, hinge type and finish.
Send the drawing to the client and the contractor for approval before production starts. Changes at this stage cost far less than changes after installation.
Step 3: Production and Finishing in the Factory
After approval, the gate is manufactured in our workshop at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv. Steel parts are cut, welded and checked for square. Where the design calls for it, the gate receives hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating, which are completed before delivery so the site does not expose finished work to dust and weather during construction.
Step 4: Installing the Posts and Hanging the Leaf
Posts are set first, plumbed and braced, with the anchors cast into the wall or footing as the drawing shows. The leaf is hung only when the concrete has cured enough to carry the load. Hinges are adjusted so the gate closes evenly with a consistent gap at the latch side.
- Check plumb on both posts before pouring
- Hang the leaf on a level, cured base
- Test the latch, stops and automation at the end
Step 5: Connecting the Fence and Wall to the Gate
Fence panels and wall finishes should be fitted to the gate posts after the gate is hung, not before. Agree on how the fence meets the post, whether by a flush connection, a cap or a trim piece, and confirm that handrails and railings line up with the gate height. Where railings are involved, the general requirements of the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 apply, and exact values should be confirmed with the project engineer.
Step 6: Final Check and Handover
Walk the completed opening with the owner, the contractor and the installer. Check gap consistency, latch alignment, safe operation of the leaf and the fit of the fence and wall finishes. Note any snags on a shared list and close them before the site is handed over. A joint walkthrough at this point prevents disputes later.
Frequently asked questions
Should the gate be ordered before the wall is built?
Ideally the gate line and post positions are fixed first, then the gate is measured and ordered once the opening is roughed in. This avoids building a wall around the wrong dimensions.
Who sets the gate posts, the wall builder or the gate installer?
Agree on this at the start. Often the gate installer supplies the post anchors and the wall builder casts them in, but the responsibilities should be written into the scope before work begins.
Can a fence be installed before the gate?
It is better to wait. Fence panels fitted before the gate posts are placed often need cutting or re-setting, so install the gate and posts first and fit the fence to them.
Do you handle automation and cabling as well?
Automation and cable routes should be planned at the coordination stage, before the wall closes, so conduits and power points are in place when the gate is installed.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is closing the wall before the gate opening is measured and agreed. Another is installing finished fence panels before the gate posts are set, which forces cutting and rework.
Our recommendation
Hold one short coordination meeting on site with the contractor, the wall builder and the gate installer before any masonry starts, and put the agreed gate line, post positions and cable routes in writing. Measure the opening again just before the gate is ordered.
Summary
Fix the gate line and posts first, measure and approve the gate drawing, then build and fit the fence and wall around it. A written sequence shared by every trade keeps the gate true and the site on schedule.
