Gate Handover Checklist: What to Check Before You Accept Your New Gate

t278-39

t278-39

A gate handover checklist is a set of practical checks you complete with the installer before accepting the work. It covers alignment, opening and closing, hardware, finish, safety features and cleanup, and it should be done while the installer is still on site.

Why a Handover Checklist Matters

When a new gate is installed, the moment the crew packs up is the best time to find problems. Once the team has left, small issues like a slight rub on the ground or a loose latch are harder to get fixed quickly. A written checklist keeps the review organized and gives both sides a shared reference.

Walk the gate slowly and open and close it several times. Check it against the measurements and drawing you approved before production started, so you can confirm that the size, opening direction and design match what was agreed.

Check Alignment, Gap and Movement

Start with the basics. The gate should swing or slide smoothly without catching, scraping or leaning. Look at the gap between the gate and the ground and between the gate and the posts. The gap should look even along the full height and width.

  • Open and close the gate at least five times.
  • Check that it stops where it should and does not drift.
  • Confirm the gap to the ground is consistent for the full swing.

Test Hardware, Latches and Locks

Hardware is where daily wear shows up first. Test every hinge, latch, lock, bolt and stopper. Operate the lock from both sides if access control matters to you, and confirm that keys or codes work as expected.

For electric or automated gates, test the remote, keypad, intercom link and safety sensors. Make sure the gate stops or reverses when it meets an obstacle. Ask the installer to demonstrate manual release so you know how to use it during a power cut.

Inspect Finish, Coating and Welds

Look closely at the surface. The finish should be even, free of drips, bubbles or thin patches, and the colour should match the sample you approved. For hot-dip galvanized parts and powder-coated surfaces, check edges, corners and joints where coverage is often weakest.

Look at welds and fixings. Joints should be neat and fully finished, with no sharp edges that could cut hands or clothing. Ask about any touch-up procedure the installer recommends for scratches that occur during installation.

Confirm Safety, Documentation and Care Instructions

Make sure the gate is secure and that nothing could pinch fingers or trap children or pets. Check that any moving parts have adequate clearance and that the stops are firmly in place. For railings or pedestrian gates, ask the installer to confirm that the design has been reviewed against the relevant Israeli standard SI 1142, and check exact dimensions with the engineer rather than relying on general rules of thumb.

Ask for the written specification, the final drawing, warranty paperwork if applicable, and simple care instructions for lubrication and cleaning.

Clean Up and Sign Off

A good handover leaves the site clean. Check that packaging, offcuts, metal shavings, protective film and tools have been removed. Look at the ground, the paving and the adjacent walls for scratches or paint splashes and ask the team to address anything they caused.

Only sign the completion form once every item on your list is checked and any open points are written down with an agreed date for resolution. Keep a copy of the signed checklist with your project documents.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a gate handover take?

A typical walkthrough takes around thirty minutes to an hour, depending on whether the gate is manual or automated. Allow extra time if you want to test every remote, sensor and lock in detail.

Can I ask for changes after the gate is installed?

Yes, if the issue is covered by the approved specification or a defect found during handover. Write it on the checklist before signing so it can be scheduled and tracked.

Should I check the gate in daylight?

Yes. Daylight makes it easier to see gaps, paint defects and uneven finish. If you can, also check it in the evening to test lighting for any automated components.

What if I find a problem after I have signed?

Contact the installer promptly with photos and a description of the issue. Refer to your signed checklist and written specification so the discussion stays clear and factual.

Common mistakes to avoid

Accepting the gate without operating it several times or testing the automation and safety features. Signing the completion form before every open point is written down and agreed.

Our recommendation

Bring a printed copy of the approved drawing and this checklist, and test the gate yourself rather than only watching the installer demonstrate it. Take photos of any issues before the crew leaves.

Summary

A careful handover check covers alignment, hardware, finish, safety, documentation and cleanup, and it protects you from problems that are harder to fix later.
