Measuring for a Replacement Gate Without Removing the Frame
t278-45

You can measure for a replacement gate without removing the existing frame by recording the clear opening, the posts, the swing direction and the ground clearance, then confirming the details on site. A professional measurement visit checks these points and produces a written specification before production starts.
Why You Often Do Not Need to Remove the Frame
Many owners assume the old frame has to come out before a new gate can be sized. In most cases this is not necessary. The existing posts and opening already tell us most of what we need, and a careful measurement captures them without any demolition.
Removing the frame adds cost, dust and risk to the surrounding wall, tiles or paving. Measuring in place keeps the work clean and lets the new gate match the old opening accurately.
What to Measure on Your Own Before the Visit
You can prepare a basic set of notes before we visit. This helps us plan the visit and reduces back-and-forth. Please write down:
- The clear width between the posts, measured at top, middle and bottom
- The clear height from the ground to the underside of the top rail or lintel
- Whether the gate opens inward or outward and to which side
- The ground condition, including any slope, step or paving
Photos from several angles are very helpful, especially of the posts and hinge side.
What Happens During the On-Site Measurement
Our team checks the opening with proper tools rather than relying only on estimates. We look for out-of-square posts, uneven ground and any obstacles that affect the gate, such as a low curb, an electric meter or a drainage channel.
We also discuss the style you want, the infill pattern and the locking arrangement. The measurement is recorded so the new gate can be built to the actual opening, not to the original drawing.
Drawing, Specification and Your Approval
After the measurement, we prepare a drawing and a written specification. This document lists the overall size, the material, the hinge and lock type, the finish and the installation method. Dimensions are shown so you can see exactly how the new gate sits in the opening.
Nothing goes into production until you have reviewed and approved the drawing. If something does not match your expectations, it is much easier to correct at this stage than after fabrication.
Production in Our Factory
Once approved, the gate is fabricated in our workshop at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv. The frame is cut and welded to the approved dimensions, then the joints are finished smooth. Components that will face the weather are prepared for protection before finishing.
Finishing is done by hot-dip galvanizing and powder coating, which are suited to outdoor use. The gate is checked for square and fit before it leaves the factory.
Installation and Final Fit
On installation day, the gate is fitted to the existing posts or to new posts if they are needed. We check that it swings freely, closes properly and that the latch engages without forcing. Gaps are checked against the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 where it applies, and exact values are confirmed with the engineer.
Before we leave, we review the operation with you, including locking and any electric components, so you know how the gate works day to day.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really match a new gate to an old opening without removing the frame?
Yes, in most cases. A careful on-site measurement captures the clear opening, post positions and ground level, which is enough to build a gate that fits the existing frame.
What if my posts are not perfectly straight or level?
This is common and we account for it during measurement. The gate is designed to the actual opening, and any adjustment needed at the hinge or latch side is noted in the specification.
Do I need to be home during the measurement?
It helps if you are, so we can confirm the swing direction, the style you want and any access or ground issues on the spot.
Will I see the drawing before production starts?
Yes. You receive a drawing and written specification and must approve them before we begin fabrication.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common error is measuring only the width at one point, when the posts may be out of line. Always check the opening at top, middle and bottom before deciding on a size.
Our recommendation
Take photos and measurements at three heights and keep the original swing direction in mind before you request a quote. Accurate on-site measurement is the single most important step in getting a replacement gate that fits the first time.
Summary
A replacement gate can be measured accurately in place, without removing the frame, by recording the opening, posts, swing and ground conditions and then confirming them on site.
