Gate Intercom and Access Control: Planning Your Gate

t278-14

t278-14

A gate intercom and access control system works best when it is planned together with the gate itself, so the wiring, power, mounting points and motor are decided before production. Start by listing who needs entry, how visitors will call you, and where the keypad or reader should sit. Planning early avoids cutting into finished work and keeps the gate and its controls working as one unit.

Why plan intercom and access control with the gate

Many homeowners add an intercom or a card reader after the gate is already built. This often leads to exposed cables, mounting brackets that do not line up and awkward reach points for visitors. When the controls are part of the plan from the start, the gate frame, the motor position and the cable route can all be designed around them.

Planning together also helps you decide what the system must do: open from a phone, open from a fob, or let a delivery driver call the house. Each choice affects the hardware you need and where it goes.

Measuring and checking the site

During the on-site visit we measure the opening width, the ground slope, the post positions and the distance from the gate to the house or the main panel. We also note where power is available and whether a cable trench can be used. Photos of the entrance from the street and from inside the yard help us plan the best spot for the call panel.

  • Opening width and clearance for swing or slide
  • Power point location and cable route
  • Reach height for keypad or reader
  • Line of sight from the street to the panel

Drawing and written specification

After measuring, we prepare a drawing that shows the gate, the post for the control unit, the cable path and the mounting height of each device. The written specification lists the components, the mounting method and the finish. You review it and approve it before any material is cut, so you know exactly what will be installed.

Exact electrical values and safety clearances are confirmed with the qualified electrician and engineer on the project, and where railing or barrier heights are involved we follow the general requirements of Israeli standard SI 1142.

Production in our Tel Aviv factory

Once the drawing is approved, the gate is manufactured at our workshop on Rival Street. Mounting plates, conduit channels and brackets for the intercom panel and reader are built into the frame during production, not added afterwards. This keeps the look clean and the fixings secure.

Metal parts are then finished with hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, depending on the exposure of the site. Finishing is done before installation so that the gate arrives at the house ready to hang.

Installation and connecting the controls

On installation day we fix the gate posts, hang the leaf or sliding section, and mount the motor. The intercom panel, keypad or reader is then fitted to its prepared bracket, and cables are run through the planned conduit. The electrician connects power and the control unit, and we test the full sequence: call, answer, open and close.

Testing covers the safety devices as well, so the gate stops or reverses when something is in its path.

Handover and keeping the system working

At handover we walk through how each part works, including how to add or remove keypad codes and fobs. We also explain the simple checks you can do yourself, such as confirming the gate closes fully and the intercom picks up clearly. Keep the written specification and drawing, since they show where the cables and devices are, which helps any future repair.

Frequently asked questions

Can an intercom be added to a gate that is already installed?

Yes, in many cases, but the cable route and mounting points are harder to find without damaging finished work. Sending photos and measurements lets us check whether the existing gate can take the controls cleanly.

What is the difference between an intercom and access control?

An intercom lets a visitor call the house and speak with you, while access control decides who can open the gate, for example through keypad codes, fobs or phone-based entry. Many setups combine both.

Do I need to decide on the access method before measuring?

It helps. Knowing whether you want keypad, fob, phone or intercom entry lets us plan the mounting heights and cable routes during the site visit.

Who connects the electrical part of the system?

Power and control wiring is done by a qualified electrician, and we coordinate the gate and controls so the work fits together during installation.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is placing the call panel where it is hard to reach from a car window or where the sun shines directly on it. Choosing the position only after the gate is finished often leads to visible cables and weak mounting.

Our recommendation

Mark the intended panel height and reach point on the gate post with tape before the drawing is approved, and ask whether a driver in a car can reach it comfortably. Include the power point and cable route in the plan from the start.

Summary

Planning the intercom and access control with the gate gives you clean mounting, hidden cabling and reliable entry. Measure, approve the drawing, and let the controls be built into the gate from the beginning.
