Gate Measurement Guide: How to Size Your Gate Right

t279-19

t279-19

To size a gate correctly, measure the clear opening width and height at several points, not just once, and note the ground slope and surface the gate will swing or slide over. Allow for posts, hinges or the track, and the gate's clearance from the ground, so the finished gate fits the opening without rubbing. Our team confirms every measurement on site before we draw and manufacture.

Why Accurate Gate Measurement Matters

A gate that is even a few centimeters off can rub against the ground, jam on the posts or fail to close properly. Because every gate we make is built to measure, the numbers you give us become the foundation of the entire order. Getting them right at the start saves time for you and avoids changes later in the process.

Measuring also tells us what kind of gate suits the space. A narrow driveway, a sloped entrance and a wide garden opening each call for a different design, so the measurements guide the choice as much as the size.

Measure the Opening in Three Places

Openings are rarely perfectly square, so measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest figure as your reference. Then measure the height at the left, center and right. Record every number and mark where each one was taken.

  • Clear width between the inside faces of the posts or wall
  • Height from the ground or threshold to the underside of the lintel
  • Any obstacles such as pillars, curbs or lighting fixtures

Plan the Clearances

A gate needs room to move. For a swing gate, leave space between the gate and the ground so it can open over any tiles, gravel or a threshold without scraping. For a sliding gate, make sure the track and the space beside the opening are free of anything that could block the travel path.

Consider how the gate will be used. If vehicles park close to the entrance, a gate that opens inward or slides may be the better choice. Note these conditions on your sketch so we can plan around them.

Account for the Ground and Surface

Sloped driveways and uneven paving change the effective height of the gate on one side. Measure the ground level on both sides of the opening, and note any planned changes such as new tiles, asphalt or concrete. Surface changes made after installation can cause a gate to drag, so it is best to plan them before the gate is fitted.

If the ground is expected to settle or change, tell us in advance so the posts and foundations can be considered during planning.

Plan for Posts, Hinges and Tracks

The gate itself is only part of the assembly. Posts, hinges, latches and tracks all take up space and affect the final opening. A post that is thicker than expected can reduce the clear width, and hinge placement changes how far the gate swings.

  • Confirm the post dimensions and their exact position
  • Decide on hinge type and where it will sit
  • For sliding gates, measure the track length and the space needed to open fully

Check Safety and Standards

Gates should be safe for people and vehicles, and they should meet the expectations of the relevant Israeli standards where they apply. For railings and similar elements, the Israeli standard SI 1142 is a useful reference. Exact technical values depend on the design, so we check them with the responsible engineer rather than relying on general figures.

Think about children, pets and the speed of automatic operation when planning the gate. These factors can influence the design, the gap sizes and the choice of mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the opening myself or hire someone?

You can take the measurements yourself using the three-point method above. We also visit on site to confirm them before any drawing or production begins.

Why do you need the height as well as the width?

Height determines the overall gate size and how it clears the ground and any overhead structure. Both dimensions are needed to plan the correct proportions and clearances.

What if my driveway is sloped?

A sloped surface means the gate may need to be planned with a specific clearance on one side. Measure the ground on both sides of the opening and share those details with us.

Can I change the gate size after ordering?

Changes are easiest before production starts. That is why we confirm the drawing and written specification with you before manufacturing begins.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common error is measuring only once and ignoring uneven posts, slopes or future surface changes. Skipping the clearance check often leads to a gate that rubs or cannot open fully.

Our recommendation

Take at least three width and height readings, note the ground condition on both sides, and send photos with your measurements. Confirm the final figures with us on site before approving the drawing.

Summary

Accurate measurements, planned clearances and attention to posts and ground conditions are the keys to a gate that fits and works well.
