Glass Canopy Fabrication for Entrances | Techno Kol Uzi
t503-11

Glass canopy fabrication is the custom manufacture of a structural or framed glass roof over an entrance, built from steel or aluminum supports and laminated safety glass. Techno Kol Uzi produces each canopy to measure in its Tel Aviv workshop, after an on-site survey and approved drawings, then installs it on site.
What a structural glass canopy involves
A glass canopy protects a building entrance from rain and sun while keeping the facade light and open. Structurally, it combines a metal frame, the supports that carry load into the building, with glass panels that are sized and laminated for safety. Some canopies are fully frameless and rely on glass fins or point fixings, while others use visible steel beams for a more traditional look.
For developers, the key question is how the canopy connects to the existing structure and what loads it must carry, including wind, snow load where relevant, and maintenance access. These details shape the entire design from the start.
Design and engineering stage
Every project starts with drawings and a written specification that define the span, projection, glass build-up, fixing points and finishes. Where a structural engineer is involved, their calculations govern member sizes and anchor types. We do not guess at structural values; exact requirements are confirmed with the engineer for each project.
- Overall span and projection from the wall
- Glass type: laminated, tempered or both
- Support method: wall brackets, fins or cable
- Drainage and slope for water shedding
Materials and finishes
Steel frames offer strength for slender profiles and are typically hot-dip galvanized and then powder coated for long exposure to the weather. Aluminum is lighter and well suited to smaller canopies. Glass is usually laminated with an interlayer so that, if a pane is damaged, the fragments remain held in place.
Finish colour, edge treatment and gutter details should be chosen together with the architect so the canopy matches the facade and the rest of the entrance metalwork.
Measurement and fabrication in our workshop
Before production, our team visits the site to measure the opening, wall condition and anchor surfaces. Measurements taken on site, rather than from plans alone, prevent costly corrections later. Steel members are cut, welded and finished in the factory at 37 Rival Street, where glass is sized and laminated to the approved dimensions.
Doing the fabrication in-house means the frame, fixings and glass arrive matched to one another, which simplifies coordination on the building site.
Installation on site
Installation begins with anchoring the wall brackets or fixings into the structure, checked for level and alignment before the frame is fixed. Glass panels are then set in place and sealed, and drainage paths are verified so water runs away from the entrance. Protective film is removed only after the final check.
Coordinate with the general contractor early so that wall preparation, lighting and any façade finishes are sequenced correctly around the canopy installation.
Safety and maintenance
Glass canopies should be inspected periodically for loose fixings, sealant condition and any cracks in the glass. Keep the glass clean and clear the gutters of debris so water does not pool. Ask for a maintenance note at handover that describes what to check and how often.
Where building regulations or the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 apply to adjacent guarding, confirm the requirements with the engineer during design.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a glass canopy project take from start to finish?
Timing depends on the size, design complexity and approval steps for drawings. We confirm the schedule once the specification and measurements are agreed. Ask us for an estimate tied to your project.
Is laminated glass necessary for an entrance canopy?
Laminated glass is generally the preferred choice overhead because the interlayer keeps fragments held together if the pane is broken. The exact build-up should be confirmed with your engineer for your loads and location.
Can you work from an architect's drawings?
Yes. We work from architectural drawings and written specifications, and we verify them with an on-site measurement before production. Any differences are raised and approved before fabrication starts.
Do you install the canopies as well as make them?
Yes, our team handles fabrication and installation, so one company is responsible for the frame, the glass and the fixings. This keeps coordination simple for developers and contractors.
Common mistakes to avoid
A common error is ordering glass from measurements taken from plans rather than the actual opening, which causes mismatches on site. Another is leaving drainage and anchor preparation until after the wall is finished.
Our recommendation
Involve the structural engineer and our team before the wall is built, so anchor points, drainage and load paths are designed in from the start. Confirm the glass build-up and finish in writing before production begins.
Summary
A well-planned glass canopy combines engineered steel support, laminated safety glass and accurate on-site measurement. Early coordination with the engineer and installer keeps the entrance safe, watertight and on schedule.
