Steel Catwalk Platforms for Industrial Maintenance Access
t482-37

A steel catwalk platform gives maintenance crews safe, stable access to valves, motors, tanks and overhead equipment. Custom steel frames are designed around your layout, load requirements and walking routes. Each structure is measured on site, drawn, produced in our factory and installed with fixed handrails and a non-slip walking surface.
Why maintenance teams need dedicated access
Working on equipment from ladders, scaffolding or improvised stands slows down repairs and creates real risk. A fixed steel catwalk puts the technician at the right height, with both hands free and a firm footing. Over time it also protects the equipment itself, since nobody needs to step on pipes or cable trays to reach a fitting.
Good access planning starts from the maintenance tasks: which points need checking, how often, and with which tools.
Information we gather before designing
Before drawing anything we ask for a few key details. The more precise the input, the better the structure fits the plant.
- Photos of the area and the equipment to be reached
- Approximate dimensions and the height of the work points
- Expected loads, including people, tools and spare parts
- Walking routes, existing pipes, ducts and clearance zones
- Environmental conditions such as humidity, chemicals or outdoor exposure
Design and load considerations
A catwalk must carry people and equipment safely over its whole life. The engineer sets the load values, the frame spacing and the connection details based on the intended use. Exact figures are confirmed with the engineer for each project rather than taken from a general rule.
Railings, toe boards and stair geometry should follow the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, and we review them with the client during the drawing stage.
Materials and finishing
Most industrial catwalks are built from hot-dip galvanized steel, which resists corrosion in damp or outdoor plants. Powder coating can be added where colour coding or extra protection is needed. Grating or checker plate is chosen for slip resistance and drainage, depending on whether oil, water or dust is present.
Stainless steel is an option where washdown or chemical exposure is frequent.
From measurement to installation
The process follows clear steps: an inquiry with photos, a site measurement, a written specification with drawings, your approval, production in our factory, finishing and then installation at your site. Pre-fabricating in the workshop means less work and fewer disturbances inside the running plant.
Each section is marked so that it can be fitted and connected quickly during a planned shutdown.
Keeping the catwalk safe over time
A catwalk is only useful if it stays sound. Schedule periodic visual checks of welds, bolted joints, grating fixings and railings. Look for corrosion at connection points and for loose items left on the walkway, since both reduce safety.
- Check fixings after vibration-heavy operations
- Keep walking surfaces clear of oil and debris
- Report any bent or damaged rail immediately
Frequently asked questions
Can a steel catwalk be added to an existing plant?
Yes, in most cases. We measure the existing structure and clearances on site and design connections that suit what is already there.
How do you decide the walkway width?
Width depends on the traffic it must handle, including people carrying tools or spare parts. The engineer sets the final dimension together with the client.
Is galvanizing necessary for indoor platforms?
Not always, but it is recommended in humid, chemical or washdown areas. For dry indoor spaces, powder-coated steel may be sufficient.
Do you install the structures yourselves?
Yes. Our team produces the sections in our Tel Aviv factory and installs them at your site, coordinating with your maintenance schedule.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common error is designing access by eye without measuring loads and clearances, which leads to later modifications. Another is skipping the handrail and walking-surface details, which creates hazards during routine work.
Our recommendation
Map every maintenance point first, then design one continuous walking route that reaches them without stepping on pipes. Ask for the engineer's load and railing specification in writing before production starts.
Summary
Custom steel catwalk platforms give maintenance teams safe, direct access to equipment, designed around your plant and built to last.
