Steel Frame Repair Process: Fixing Scratches and Dents
t488-38

The steel frame repair process starts with an on-site inspection and measurement, followed by a written plan, workshop repair of the damaged section, and a finish that matches the original coating. Minor scratches and dents are usually handled without replacing the whole frame, but the right method depends on the metal, the coating and where the frame is installed.
Step 1: Sending photos and describing the damage
Most repairs begin with a simple inquiry. Send clear photos of the damaged area from a few distances, plus one photo of the whole frame so we can see its shape and where it sits. Note what the frame is made of, whether it is iron, aluminum or stainless steel, and whether it is painted or powder coated.
- Photos in daylight, close and wide
- Approximate size of each scratch or dent
- Location: balcony, entrance, parking area or interior
Step 2: On-site measurement and inspection
A technician visits the site to check the damage in person. We measure the affected length and profile, look for rust under the coating, and check whether the dent has affected the structure or only the surface. Measurements are taken on the actual frame, not estimated from photos, because a few millimeters can change how a repaired section fits.
If the frame is part of a structural element, we also check how it is fixed to the wall or floor so the repair does not disturb the anchors.
Step 3: Drawing and written specification
After the inspection we prepare a drawing and a written specification. It describes the method (straightening, cutting out and replacing a section, or filling and refinishing), the materials, and the finish. You review it and approve it before any work starts, so you know exactly what will be done.
For frames that carry loads, such as railings and handrails, the specification notes that the repair follows the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 in general terms. Exact values are confirmed with the engineer during planning.
Step 4: Workshop repair in our Tel Aviv factory
Once approved, the damaged section is repaired at our factory at 37 Rival Street, Tel Aviv. Working in the workshop lets us straighten or cut and weld with proper tools and support, which is hard to do cleanly on site. Dents are carefully pulled back, damaged sections are cut out and replaced with matching profile, and welds are dressed smooth.
- Straightening or section replacement
- Weld cleaning and grinding
- Surface preparation before finishing
Step 5: Finishing to match the original coating
A repaired area must match the rest of the frame. Depending on the original finish, the section is hot-dip galvanized or powder coated to match the color and texture. Galvanizing protects steel against corrosion, so repaired spots should not be left bare. We check the color under daylight before the piece leaves the workshop.
Step 6: Reinstallation and final check
The repaired section is brought back to the site and fitted into place. Our team checks alignment, fixings and gaps, and makes sure the frame sits level and secure. Once installed, we confirm that the finish matches and the frame works as intended. Small touch-ups on site are possible when the coating is slightly disturbed during fitting.
Frequently asked questions
Can a small dent be repaired without replacing the whole frame?
In most cases, yes. A dent is usually straightened or the damaged section is cut out and replaced, so the rest of the frame stays in place.
Will the repaired spot look different from the rest of the frame?
We aim for a match by using the same profile and finish. Slight differences in tone can happen with older coatings, so we check the color before installation.
How do you prevent rust on a repaired area?
Repaired steel is cleaned and then galvanized or powder coated, which protects the metal. Leaving bare steel exposed is the main thing to avoid.
Do I need to be home during the repair?
You only need to be present for the on-site measurement and the final installation. The workshop repair happens at our factory.
Common mistakes to avoid
Covering a dent with paint alone hides the problem while moisture gets under the surface. Leaving a scratch with bare steel showing invites rust, so it should be treated before it spreads.
Our recommendation
Send photos and measurements early, and do not start filling or painting the damage yourself, because a wrong repair can make the proper fix harder. Ask for the written specification before approval so the method and finish are clear.
Summary
The steel frame repair process moves from photos and on-site measurement to a written plan, workshop repair, matching finish and careful reinstallation. Early inspection and approval keep the repair accurate and the result consistent with the original frame.
