Modifying an Existing Steel Frame: Process and Options

t488-39

t488-39

Modifying an existing steel frame usually follows a clear sequence: on-site measurement of the current structure, a written drawing and specification, client approval, factory production with the same finish, and then installation. The main options are extending the frame, replacing or reinforcing individual members, or adding new openings and attachments, and the right choice depends on the condition of what is already installed.

Why modify an existing steel frame?

Homeowners and building committees often need to change a steel frame that was installed years ago. Common reasons include adding a balcony section, widening an opening, fitting a new gate, or replacing a damaged part that no longer matches the rest.

Before anything is cut or welded, it helps to be clear about the goal. A small visual change can often be handled by adding members, while a change to the load path or the connection points needs more careful planning and a drawing approved by the engineer.

Step 1: Inquiry and on-site measurement

The process starts with an inquiry, ideally with photos of the existing frame, its surroundings, and a short description of what you want to change. This lets us understand the situation before visiting.

Our team then measures on site. We record the existing dimensions, the type and condition of the steel, the fixing points, and how the frame meets the wall, floor or slab. Measurements taken from the actual structure are more reliable than old plans, which often differ from what was built.

Step 2: Drawing, specification and approval

Based on the measurements, we prepare a drawing and a written specification covering profiles, connections, finish and installation method. You review and approve these documents before production begins.

  • Confirm which parts are kept, replaced or extended
  • Check how new members connect to existing ones
  • Agree on finish, such as hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating

Where structural loads are involved, the engineer confirms the design. Exact values are checked with the engineer, not assumed from general guidance.

Step 3: Factory production

Once approved, the parts are cut, shaped and welded in our workshop at Rival Street 37 in Tel Aviv. Working in the factory gives better control over alignment and weld quality than work done on a wet or unstable site.

Where the new parts must match an older frame, we pay attention to profile size and geometry so the finished structure looks consistent. Galvanizing or powder coating is applied before installation so that the new and existing sections are protected in the same way.

Step 4: Finishing and installation

After finishing, the parts are delivered and installed. The old connections are prepared, the new members are fixed, and alignment is checked against the drawing. Any touch-up of coating at the joints is done on site.

Installation is coordinated with the building work around it, such as plastering or tiling, so that the frame is not damaged afterwards. The result is checked against the approved specification before the job is closed.

Options for modifying a frame

The most common options are:

  • Extending

Adding new sections to an existing run, such as a longer railing or a wider gate frame.
  • Replacing

Removing damaged or corroded members and fitting new ones in matching profile.
  • Reinforcing

Adding members to an existing frame that needs more stiffness.
  • Adapting

Creating new openings, fixings or attachments in an existing structure.

Which option makes sense depends on what is already there and what you want to achieve.

Frequently asked questions

Can you match a new section to an older steel frame?

In many cases yes. We measure the existing profile and aim to match its size and geometry, so the new part blends with the original.

Do I need a drawing before modifying my frame?

Yes. We prepare a drawing and written specification after measurement, and you approve them before production starts.

Will the modified frame be coated the same way as the original?

We discuss the finish during planning, such as hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, and apply the agreed finish to the new parts before installation.

Who checks the structural side of a modification?

Where loads or connections are affected, the engineer reviews the design, and exact values are checked with the engineer.

Common mistakes to avoid

Starting work based on old plans without measuring the real structure, and making changes without checking how new members connect to existing ones, are the most common causes of problems.

Our recommendation

Measure the existing frame carefully and send clear photos before ordering any work, and ask for a written drawing so you know exactly what will be changed.

Summary

Modifying a steel frame works best with on-site measurement, an approved drawing, factory production and careful installation. Choosing between extending, replacing, reinforcing or adapting depends on the existing structure.
