Transporting Custom Steel Frames Safely to Site

t488-27

t488-27

A steel frame transport process starts before the frame leaves the factory, with accurate on-site measurement, a written specification and a transport plan that matches the access route. The frame is then produced, finished, protected and loaded so it arrives undamaged and ready for installation.

Step 1: On-site measurement and access check

Every safe move begins with a proper site visit. Our team measures the openings, floor levels and wall conditions, and checks the route the frame will travel, including stairwells, lift sizes, gate widths and turning space for the delivery vehicle.

  • Clear dimensions of the opening and the access path
  • Weight estimate and where the frame can be lifted
  • Positions for crane, hoist or manual handling

Recording these details early prevents surprises on delivery day.

Step 2: Drawing and written specification

Measurements are turned into a technical drawing and a written specification. The document lists the frame sections, connection points, fixing method and the sections that must be delivered in pieces because they will not fit whole.

The client reviews and approves the drawing before production starts. Any change at this stage is far cheaper than a change after the frame has been welded and finished.

Step 3: Production in the factory

Frames are cut, welded and assembled in our workshop on Rival Street. Where a frame is large, we plan split points that allow safe handling and clean joints on site. Each component is checked against the drawing before it moves to finishing.

Planning the split points in the factory keeps the on-site connections simple and reduces the number of heavy lifts needed.

Step 4: Finishing and protection

Finishing is part of transport safety. Hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating protects the steel from weather during transit and storage, while the frame is wrapped and padded at contact points so the surface is not scratched.

  • Protective film or padding on visible faces
  • Edge guards on sharp corners
  • Labels marking each piece and its fixing position

Step 5: Loading, transport and unloading

Pieces are secured on the vehicle with straps and supports so they cannot shift during the journey. Heavy items go low and centred, and long frames are carried on suitable racks rather than loose.

On arrival, the load should be unloaded using the lifting points marked in the plan, with the site team in place and the access route kept clear.

Step 6: Installation and final check

On site, the frame is set in position, aligned and fixed according to the approved drawing. The installer checks levels, verticals and connections, and confirms that the finish is undamaged before the work is signed off.

Where railings or balustrades are involved, fixing details are checked against Israeli standard SI 1142, and exact values are confirmed with the engineer on the project.

Frequently asked questions

How do you move a large steel frame into a building?

We plan the route during the site measurement and, when needed, split the frame into smaller sections that fit through doors, lifts and stairwells. Lifting points are marked so the frame can be handled safely by crane, hoist or a manual team.

Is the steel frame protected during transport?

Yes. Frames are finished with hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, then wrapped, padded at contact points and secured on the vehicle with straps and supports.

Do you deliver the whole frame in one piece?

Not always. Some frames are delivered in sections, joined on site, when a single piece would be too large or too heavy for the access route.

What information should I send before the transport is planned?

Send photos of the opening and access route, and tell us the floor level, the lift or stair details and any gate or road limits. We then arrange an on-site measurement and prepare the drawing.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering the frame before measuring the access route is the most common error, because the piece may not fit through the door or stairwell. Skipping the approved drawing also leads to changes after production, which cost time and can damage finished surfaces.

Our recommendation

Confirm the access route and lifting points in writing before production starts, and ask for the frame to be split into sections wherever the route is tight. Keep the site clear and have the installation team present on delivery day.

Summary

A safe steel frame transport process depends on measurement, a clear drawing, smart splitting, protective finishing and secure loading, followed by careful installation.
