Quality Control Checks During Steel Frame Production

t488-22

t488-22

Quality control for steel frames runs through every step: accurate on-site measurement, a written specification approved by the client, checks during cutting and welding in the factory, and inspection of the finish before installation. Each stage is verified against the approved drawing so the frame fits the opening and performs as planned.

Measurement and site verification

Every custom steel frame starts on site. Our team measures the opening itself rather than relying only on the architectural plan, because walls are rarely perfectly square or level. We record width and height at several points, check diagonals, and note the wall material, the floor finish and any obstacles nearby.

  • Diagonal comparison to confirm the opening is square
  • Measurements at top, middle and bottom of the opening
  • Notes on fixing surfaces and access

These readings become the basis for the drawing, so errors caught here never reach the workshop.

Drawing and written specification

Based on the measurements, we prepare a drawing and a written specification covering profile sizes, dimensions, fixing points, material and finish. The client reviews and approves both before production begins. This step is where most misunderstandings are caught, since it is far easier to correct a line on paper than a welded frame.

Any change requested after approval is recorded in writing and the drawing is reissued.

Checks during cutting and welding

In the factory, each profile is checked against the drawing before it is cut. During assembly, the frame is laid on a flat surface and measured again to confirm dimensions and squareness. Welds are inspected for consistent penetration, clean seams and absence of cracks, and corners are checked to ensure the frame closes without forcing.

What the workshop checks

  • Dimensions against the approved drawing
  • Squareness of corners and overall frame
  • Weld quality and surface condition

Surface preparation and finishing

A frame that is well built can still fail if the finish is poor. Before coating, we remove weld spatter and grind rough areas. The frame then goes through hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, depending on the location and use. After finishing, we inspect the surface for even coverage, drips, scratches and colour consistency before the frame leaves the factory.

Pre-delivery inspection and labelling

Before delivery, each frame is checked once more against the approved drawing. Pieces are labelled by position so the installation crew can match them to the opening without guesswork. This reduces handling damage and speeds up fitting on site.

Protective packing is applied where the finish could be scratched during transport.

Installation and final fit

On site, the frame is set, levelled and fixed to the structure according to the agreed method. We check alignment after fixing and confirm that the frame operates correctly with any attached elements such as doors or gates. For railings and balustrades, height and spacing are verified against Israeli standard SI 1142, with exact values confirmed by the engineer on the project.

Frequently asked questions

Do you measure the site myself before making a steel frame?

Yes. We measure on site at several points and check diagonals, because real openings are rarely perfectly square. These measurements form the basis of the drawing.

Will I approve the drawing before production starts?

Yes. The drawing and written specification are sent for your approval, and production begins only after you confirm them. Later changes are recorded in writing.

How do you make sure the frame fits the opening?

The frame is checked for dimensions and squareness during assembly, and again before delivery against the approved drawing. Each piece is labelled by position to simplify installation.

Which finishes do you use to protect steel frames?

We use hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, chosen according to where the frame will be installed and how it will be used. Each finish is inspected for coverage and consistency before delivery.

Common mistakes to avoid

Ordering a frame from a plan alone without measuring the actual opening is a common error that leads to misfit. Approving a drawing without checking the dimensions and finish details can also cause costly changes later.

Our recommendation

Ask for on-site measurement and a written, approved drawing before production begins, and request that the finish type be stated in the specification. These two steps prevent most fit and finish problems.

Summary

Quality control covers measurement, drawing approval, factory checks, finishing and installation. Checking each stage keeps the steel frame accurate and durable.
