Window Measurement Checklist and Recording Template
t404-6

A good window measurement checklist records each opening's width, height and depth at several points, plus the frame type, opening direction, wall material and site access. Recording everything on a standard template with photos and a sketch lets the factory draw and produce aluminum windows accurately the first time.
Why a Standard Measurement Template Matters
Window orders go wrong most often because of incomplete or inconsistent site notes. A single template used on every visit ensures that nothing is forgotten, whether the site visit is done by a project manager, an architect or a contractor's representative.
Each opening should get its own entry, numbered to match the floor plan and the photos. Consistent numbering makes it easy to match the drawing, the specification and the installed unit later in the process.
Measuring the Opening Correctly
Measure width and height at more than one point. Walls are rarely perfectly square or plumb, so take readings at the top, middle and bottom for height, and at the left, centre and right for width. Record the smallest value as the reference and note any significant variation.
- Width at top, middle and bottom
- Height at left, centre and right
- Depth of the reveal (wall thickness)
- Position of the opening relative to the floor and ceiling
Use a steel tape and write readings in millimetres, with the unit clearly stated on the form.
Recording Frame, Finish and Opening Details
Beyond dimensions, the template should capture how the window will be used. Note the intended opening direction, whether the window is fixed, sliding or casement, and which side the handle should be on when seen from inside.
Record the wall material, such as concrete, block or existing frame, because it affects fixing method. Note the desired colour and finish, and whether the unit is a replacement in an existing opening or a new opening. Photograph the opening from inside and outside.
Site Access and Logistics Notes
Production and installation depend on access. Record how the unit will reach the floor: stairwell width, lift dimensions, elevator availability, and whether the unit can be carried or needs a crane or hoist. Note any balcony, scaffolding or railing that could block installation.
Also record working hours allowed by the building committee, parking for delivery vehicles, and the name and contact of the person who will receive the installation team on site.
From Site Notes to Drawing and Approval
Once the measurements are recorded, the factory prepares a drawing and a written specification. The client should review both carefully, checking every dimension, the opening direction and the finish before giving approval. Approval should be given in writing so there is a clear record.
Any change after approval can affect production, so ask for a fresh site check if conditions have changed since the first visit.
Checking Before Production and Installation
Before production starts, confirm that the opening has not changed and that the drawing matches the template. During installation, check that the unit is plumb, level and square, and that the sealing and fixing details follow the approved specification.
Where railings or guards are part of the opening, the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 should be considered, and exact values should be verified with the engineer rather than assumed.
Frequently asked questions
How many measurements should I take for each window?
Take at least three width and three height readings, plus the reveal depth. This shows whether the opening is out of square and which dimension should be used as the reference.
Should I measure the window or the opening?
Measure the opening, the space the unit will fill. Measuring an old frame can be misleading if the frame itself is out of square or damaged.
Is a photo enough instead of a sketch?
Photos are very helpful but should be combined with a simple sketch showing dimensions and numbering. A sketch gives the drawing team clear, measured information in one place.
Who should be present during the site visit?
Ideally the project manager or the person who will approve the drawing, and someone who knows the building access. Their presence reduces the chance of missing details.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is measuring once at one point and assuming the opening is perfectly regular. Forgetting access details and the opening direction causes many delays after production has started.
Our recommendation
Record every opening on the same template, take multiple readings, photograph each one, and sign off the drawing in writing before production begins.
Summary
A consistent window measurement checklist, recorded carefully on site, is the foundation of accurate aluminum windows and a smooth installation.
