How to Check Wall Plumb and Level Before Window Measurement
t404-5

To check wall level for window measurement, use a long spirit level or laser level on the opening's sill and head, and a plumb line or level on both jambs. Note any out-of-plumb or out-of-level differences, because they affect how the aluminum frame is sized and fitted.
Why wall plumb and level matter for window measurement
A window frame is only as accurate as the opening it sits in. If the wall is out of plumb (not vertical) or out of level (not horizontal), the frame measured at one point may not fit at another. Checking these conditions before measuring prevents guesswork later.
Aluminum windows are made to measure in our factory at Rival Street 37, so the measurements taken on site drive the whole production run. Recording the wall condition at the start saves time for everyone involved.
Tools you need on site
Prepare simple, reliable tools before arriving at the opening:
- A long spirit level (at least 120 cm)
- A laser level or plumb line
- A steel tape measure
- A pencil, notebook or measurement sheet
- Photos of the opening from several angles
Calibrate or check your level on a flat surface before use.
Step-by-step: checking the sill and head
Start with the horizontal checks. Place the spirit level along the sill or the bottom of the opening and read the bubble. Repeat at the head (top of the opening). Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, since a difference in width often signals an out-of-plumb wall.
What to record
Write down the height difference between the left and right ends of the sill, and the height of the head at each end. Mark any dips, bulges or protrusions in the masonry, plaster or concrete.
Step-by-step: checking the jambs
Next, check the vertical sides of the opening. Hang a plumb line or hold the spirit level against each jamb from the sill to the head. Note whether the jamb leans toward the inside or outside and by how much at the top compared with the bottom.
Also check the diagonal dimensions. Measure from corner to opposite corner. If the two diagonals differ noticeably, the opening is out of square, and the installer should be aware of it before the frame is ordered.
How wall condition affects the fabrication and installation
When the opening is not plumb or level, our team takes that into account when drawing the window and writing the specification. Depending on the site condition, the frame may need an adjusted profile or the installer may plan for shims and sealing. Exact tolerances and standards are confirmed with the engineer, so please pass on your readings rather than adjusting dimensions yourself.
Clear notes and photos help the drawing team understand the site before approval.
Practical tips for site supervisors and installers
Check the opening after plastering or finishing work, not before, since final surfaces can change the readings. Take at least two readings at each point and confirm them with a second person. Mark your measurement points on the wall so they can be rechecked later. If something looks unusual, such as a sloping floor, a missing lintel or a major crack, stop and report it before continuing with the measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a laser level to check the wall?
Not necessarily. A long spirit level and a plumb line are enough for most openings. A laser level can make the check faster, especially for long or tall openings.
Why should I measure the diagonals of the opening?
Diagonal measurements show whether the opening is square. If the two diagonals differ, the frame will need to account for that difference during fabrication and installation.
What if the sill is not level?
Record the height difference at each end and take photos. Send these readings to us so the drawing and installation plan can address the condition.
Should I measure before or after plastering?
Measure after the final surface work is complete, because plaster and finishes can change the opening size and shape.
Common mistakes to avoid
Measuring before the wall is finished or relying on a single reading can lead to frames that do not fit. Always check at several points and confirm your results.
Our recommendation
Take at least two readings at the sill, head and both jambs, mark the points on the wall, and send photos with your notes so the team can plan accurately.
Summary
Checking wall plumb and level before measuring gives you accurate readings, avoids fitting problems, and helps the aluminum window be made and installed correctly the first time.
