Balcony Railing Removal Process Before New Installation

t320-29

t320-29

The balcony railing removal process starts with a site check to confirm how the old railing is fixed, followed by careful dismantling, removal of anchors and debris, and inspection of the slab or wall. Once the base is sound and measured, the new railing can be drawn, produced in our Tel Aviv workshop and installed on a clean, prepared surface.

Why a planned removal matters

An old balcony railing is often fixed into concrete with anchors that have been in place for years. Removing it without a plan can crack tiles, damage waterproofing or leave holes that are hard to repair. A planned removal protects the balcony and makes the new installation faster and more accurate.

Before any work begins, it helps to agree on who is responsible for the surrounding finishes and whether the building committee needs to be informed.

Site visit and condition check

Our team visits the balcony to see how the railing is attached, whether it sits on the slab, a upstand or a side wall, and what material it is made from. We photograph the anchor points, check for rust, cracks and previous repairs, and note any water leaks or loose tiles.

  • Type of base: slab, wall or edge beam
  • Anchor condition and spacing
  • Tiles, waterproofing and drainage

Step by step dismantling

Dismantling usually begins with the handrail and infill sections, then the posts. Cutting or unbolting is done carefully so that the removed parts can be reused for reference or recycling. Anchors are cut back or extracted, and any remaining bolts are ground flush with the surface.

Gaps left after removal are cleaned of dust and loose material, so the surface is ready for inspection.

Inspecting and preparing the base

Once the railing is gone, the base is the most important element to check. Cracked concrete, damaged edges or failed sealant should be repaired before a new railing is fixed. Small holes are filled with a suitable mortar, and loose tiles are re-bedded.

If the old railing hid a waterproofing issue, this is the moment to address it, because a new railing will not solve a leak.

Measuring and drawing the new railing

With a clean base, we take exact measurements of the balcony length, corners, post positions and any slope. We then prepare a drawing and written specification showing the design, materials and fixing method. You review and approve the drawing before anything is produced.

Measuring after removal is more accurate than relying on old dimensions, because the original railing may not have been installed exactly to plan.

Production, finishing and installation

The approved railing is manufactured in our factory at 37 Rival Street. Finishing options such as hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating are applied before delivery to protect against weather. On installation day, the posts are fixed to the base, the infill is set, and the railing is checked for alignment and stability.

Final fixings are confirmed against the engineer's requirements, and the site is cleaned before we leave.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be home during the balcony railing removal process?

It is helpful to be present at the site visit and the handover, but you do not need to be there for every hour of the dismantling. We will agree on access arrangements in advance.

Will the removal damage my balcony tiles?

Careful dismantling minimises damage, but tiles near anchor points can sometimes crack. Any damaged tiles are noted during the site check so you know what to expect before work starts.

What happens to the old railing?

Usable parts can be kept for reference or recycled, and we can remove unwanted material from the site. Let us know your preference when you book the visit.

How do I know the new railing is safe?

The railing is designed against the Israeli railing standard SI 1142 in general terms, and exact values are checked with the engineer before production.

Common mistakes to avoid

Skipping the base inspection and fixing a new railing into a damaged slab is the most common error. Relying on the old railing's dimensions instead of fresh measurements can also cause alignment problems.

Our recommendation

Ask for the base to be inspected and any leaks repaired before the new railing is fixed, and approve a written drawing before production starts.

Summary

A proper removal process protects your balcony, gives accurate measurements and ensures the new railing is installed on a sound, clean base.
