Measuring an Irregular Balcony for a Glass Railing

t320-4

t320-4

To measure an irregular balcony for a glass railing, record each edge length, every corner angle, the slab height at several points and the position of any posts or walls, then have the measurements verified on site before production. Because no two edges are parallel, each glass panel must be cut to its own dimensions, so a single average measurement will not fit.

Why irregular balconies need a different approach

A straight balcony can often be measured with one tape and a few repeated numbers. Angled, curved or stepped balconies are different. Each section of railing meets the slab at its own angle, and the top line may rise or fall relative to the floor. Glass panels are rigid and cannot be trimmed on site, so accuracy at the measuring stage matters more than anywhere else in the project.

Plan on the measuring visit taking longer than you expect. The goal is a complete record of the shape, not a quick estimate.

What to record during the site visit

Work through the balcony in a fixed order so nothing is missed. Typical items include:

  • Length of every edge, measured from wall to wall or corner to corner
  • The angle at each corner, read with a digital angle finder
  • Height of the finished slab at several points along the edge
  • Position and size of posts, columns, drains and existing fixings
  • Any curve described by radius, or by offsets from a chord

Photograph each corner and label the photos against your sketch.

Drawing the balcony and writing the specification

After measuring, the field data is turned into a scaled drawing that shows every segment, angle and glass panel. This drawing is the basis of the written specification, which lists glass type and thickness, top rail and base profile, fixing method and finish. Check that the sum of the segment lengths matches the overall dimensions you took on site. Small discrepancies are common and are easier to fix on paper than in the factory.

Exact structural values, such as the required height and load for guarding, should be confirmed with your engineer, with reference to the Israeli railing standard SI 1142.

Client approval before production

Review the drawing with the person who will live with the railing. Confirm the panel layout, the position of any gaps or posts, the side on which the handrail sits, and the finish colour. Ask for changes now, while they are a line on paper. Once you approve the drawing in writing, the factory will treat it as the reference, and any later changes to the balcony layout may affect the fit and the schedule.

Production in the factory

At Techno Kol Uzi, the approved drawing goes to the workshop, where the metal base, posts and rails are cut and assembled to the drawing. Glass is ordered and cut to the individual panel dimensions, which is why measurement precision is critical. Metal components are finished by hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, depending on the exposure and the chosen look, and checked for fit before they leave the factory.

Installation and final check

On installation day, the team confirms the slab and wall conditions against the drawing, fixes the base profile and posts, and then sets the glass panels one by one. Check that the top rail is level or follows the intended slope, that the gaps are even and that the fixings are secure. Ask the installer to walk you through the finished railing and explain how to clean the glass and check the fixings over time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I measure an irregular balcony myself?

You can take rough measurements yourself, but glass should only be ordered from precise site measurements taken by someone experienced. A small error in an angle can make a panel impossible to fit.

What is the most important thing to measure?

Every corner angle and every edge length, because these determine the shape of each panel. Slab height at several points is also essential where the floor is not level.

Do I need a drawing before production starts?

Yes. A scaled drawing with all segments and dimensions, approved in writing by the client, is the safest basis for cutting glass and metal.

What happens if the balcony walls are not straight?

Out-of-plumb or uneven walls are recorded on site and reflected in the drawing, so the fixings and panel edges can be adjusted to suit the real conditions.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is relying on a single average measurement or skipping the corner angles, which leads to panels that do not fit. Another is approving a layout verbally without a written drawing.

Our recommendation

Measure every edge and angle twice, sketch the balcony with dimensions, and have the drawing approved in writing before any glass is ordered.

Summary

Accurate measurement, a clear drawing and written approval are what make a glass railing on an irregular balcony fit correctly the first time.
