Replacing a Single Bar Within an Existing Grille: A Practical Guide

t264-36

t264-36

In many cases a single damaged bar can be replaced without dismantling the whole grille, as long as the profile, dimensions and fixing points can be matched accurately. The process starts with a site measurement and a check of the existing bar's section, then a new bar is made in the factory and fitted to the original frame.

When Replacing One Bar Makes Sense

Replacing a single bar is often the most sensible option when only one section of a window or balcony grille is bent, cracked, corroded through or loosened from its frame. The rest of the grille may still be sound, and keeping it saves time and avoids unnecessary disruption to the wall or balcony.

It is worth checking the surrounding bars first. If several bars show the same corrosion or the welds are weakening, a full replacement may be more economical in the long run. A short inspection on site helps decide which route is right for your situation.

Measuring and Matching the Existing Bar

Accurate measurement is the foundation of a clean replacement. We record the bar's cross-section, overall length, spacing to neighbouring bars, the type of connection at each end and the finish of the existing metal. Photos from several angles help us identify the original profile.

  • Profile shape and wall thickness
  • Exact length between fixing points
  • Bar spacing and alignment with neighbouring bars
  • Fixing method: welded, bolted or set into a frame

Where the original profile is no longer available, we propose the closest standard section and explain any visible difference before production.

Drawing and Written Specification

Once the measurements are complete, we prepare a simple drawing showing the replacement bar in context with the surrounding grille. The written specification lists material, profile, length, connection method and finish. This gives you a clear picture of what will be installed.

You review the drawing and specification and confirm them before any work begins in the factory. Any changes you request are noted and reflected in a revised version, so there are no surprises at installation.

Production in Our Factory

The new bar is cut, shaped and prepared in our workshop at Rival Street 37 in Tel Aviv. Working in the factory allows precise cutting and clean welding, and lets us match the bar's dimensions carefully to the existing grille. Ends are finished so that they fit neatly into the original fixing points.

After fabrication, the piece is finished to suit the rest of the grille. This is normally hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating, applied so that the new section blends with the older bars around it.

Installation on Site

Installation involves removing the damaged bar, preparing the fixing points and fitting the new section into place. Depending on the original construction, the new bar may be welded in, bolted or secured with appropriate anchors. We aim to keep disturbance to the wall or balcony as small as possible.

Once fitted, we check alignment against the neighbouring bars and confirm that the grille is firm and secure before finishing the touch-ups and clearing the work area.

Keeping the Grille Safe and Matching

A repaired grille should still meet the safety and strength requirements that apply to railings and guards in Israel, which are set out in the Israeli standard SI 1142. Exact dimensional and load values are confirmed with the engineer on each job rather than assumed, so the replacement is checked against the actual conditions of your building.

Matching the colour and texture is also important for a neat result. If you are unsure whether the new section will blend, send us photos and we will advise on the most suitable finish before production begins.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just one bar without removing the whole grille?

In most cases yes, provided the bar's profile and fixing points can be matched accurately. The site inspection will confirm whether a single-bar replacement is practical for your grille.

How do you match an old bar if the original profile is unavailable?

We use the measurements and photos to identify the closest standard section and show you any visible difference before production. You approve the drawing before we start work.

Will the new bar match the colour of the existing grille?

We can apply a finish such as hot-dip galvanizing or powder coating to help the new section blend in. Sending clear photos in advance helps us recommend the best match.

Do I need to send photos before requesting a quote?

Yes, photos of the damaged bar and the surrounding grille are very helpful. They allow us to understand the job before the on-site measurement.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is measuring only the damaged bar without checking the spacing, fixing points and profile of the neighbouring bars. Mismatched dimensions can cause the new section to sit misaligned or fail to fit at all.

Our recommendation

Before ordering a replacement, photograph the damaged area from several angles and keep the removed bar if possible, as it is the best reference for the profile and connection details. Have the grille inspected as a whole so you know whether other bars need attention too.

Summary

Replacing one bar in an existing grille is often quicker and more economical than a full replacement, as long as the profile and fixings are matched accurately. Good measurement, a clear drawing and careful factory production make the difference.
