Shop Drawings for Metal Fences: What to Expect

t306-8

t306-8

Shop drawings for metal fences are the detailed plans that show exactly how each panel, post, gate and fixing will be built, based on measurements taken on site. Before production starts, the client reviews and approves them, so that the factory builds to confirmed dimensions and finishes.

Why shop drawings matter for metal fences

A shop drawing is the bridge between the site and the workshop. It translates the actual conditions of the property into a document the factory can build from, without guesswork. For iron and aluminum fences, where every panel is made to measure, this step prevents costly rework.

For contractors and project managers, the drawing also becomes a shared reference. It shows the architect, the building committee and the installer the same layout, heights, spacing and gate positions, so everyone signs off on the same thing.

Site measurement and the information we need

The process starts with an inquiry that includes photos and basic site details. We then measure on site, checking openings, levels, wall and slab conditions, and the exact position of posts and anchors. Slopes and uneven ground are recorded because they change panel heights and step arrangements.

  • Overall length and height of each section
  • Gate width, swing direction and opening type
  • Post locations and fixing surface (concrete, stone, steel or wall)
  • Existing elements that must be matched or avoided

Drawing and written specification

After measurement, the drawing is prepared showing elevations, sections and fixing details. It is accompanied by a written specification listing materials, profile sizes, infill pattern, coating system and gate hardware. Where the project needs structural confirmation, such as post embedding or loads on a long span, the engineer's input is included.

Please note that exact structural values and code requirements, including the Israeli railing standard SI 1142, are checked with the engineer for each project rather than assumed from general rules.

Client approval before production

The drawing and specification are sent for written approval. This is the most important checkpoint in the process. Any change to height, pattern, colour or gate position should be made now, because once production begins, modifications take time and may affect materials already cut.

  • Check dimensions against the site photos
  • Confirm the infill design and spacing
  • Confirm finish and colour reference
  • Sign off the revised drawing before release

Production and finishing in the factory

Once approved, the fence is produced in our factory at Rival Street 37, Tel Aviv. Profiles are cut, welded and assembled to the drawing, then checked for squareness and fit. Iron components receive protective treatment such as hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating, while aluminum parts are finished to the specified colour.

Completed sections are checked against the approved drawing before they leave the workshop, so that installation on site goes as planned.

Installation and final check

On site, the team installs posts and anchors according to the drawing, then hangs the panels and gates. Levels are verified along the full run, and gates are adjusted for smooth operation. Where the drawing noted fixing details for a specific wall or slab type, those details are followed exactly.

A final walkthrough compares the installed fence with the approved drawing, which closes the loop between planning and the finished result.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get shop drawings?

Timing depends on the project size and how quickly the site measurement and client feedback are completed. Providing clear photos and access to the site at the start helps the process move faster.

Do I need to be present for the site measurement?

It is helpful if you or your site representative attend, since they can point out existing conditions and fixing surfaces. If that is not possible, clear photos and notes about levels and obstacles are required.

Can the drawing be changed after I approve it?

Changes are possible before production starts. Once material has been cut or welded, changes become more difficult and may affect the schedule, so review the drawing carefully before signing.

Who checks structural requirements for the fence?

Structural requirements are confirmed with the engineer for each project. The specification notes where engineering input is needed, so you know which details need sign-off.

Common mistakes to avoid

Approving a drawing without checking dimensions against the actual site, or skipping the review of gate swing and fixing details, often leads to rework. Always compare the drawing with the photos and measurements before signing.

Our recommendation

Walk the site with the drawing in hand and confirm each height, gate position and fixing surface before approval. Taking a few extra minutes at this stage saves far more time during production and installation.

Summary

Shop drawings turn site measurements into an approved plan for iron and aluminum fences. Careful review before production protects your schedule and the final result.
