Iron Door Welding Process: Steps from Measure to Install

t418-16

t418-16

The iron door welding process at Techno Kol Uzi follows a fixed sequence: on-site measurement, a written drawing and specification approved by the client, cutting and fitting of the frame and infill in the factory, welding and grinding of the joints, then surface protection and installation on site. Each stage is checked before the next begins, so the door arrives ready to hang with the frame square and the joints sound.

Site Measurement and Survey

Every door starts on site. We measure the opening at several heights and widths, check whether the wall is plumb and level, and note the swing direction, the threshold condition and the material of the surrounding structure. Measuring from photos alone is not enough, because an opening that looks square often differs by several millimeters from top to bottom.

  • Opening width and height at three points
  • Diagonal check for squareness
  • Wall material and anchor points
  • Swing direction and clearance requirements

Drawing and Written Specification

From the survey we prepare a drawing showing the frame profile, the leaf layout, infill pattern, hinge and lock positions, and the finish. The specification lists the steel sections, wall thickness and the galvanizing or powder coating to be applied. The client approves this document in writing before any metal is cut, which prevents disputes about dimensions later.

Cutting, Fitting and Tack Welding

Profiles are cut to length with the mitres and notches shown on the drawing. The frame is first assembled loose on a flat bench and checked against the diagonals. Only when the frame is square do we tack weld the corners, so that distortion is caught early rather than after full welding.

  • Cut to drawing with checked mitres
  • Dry-fit on a flat reference surface
  • Diagonal and flatness check
  • Tack welds at corners before final welding

Full Welding and Distortion Control

Once the frame is confirmed, the joints are fully welded in a sequence that alternates sides to limit heat-induced movement. Steel moves as it cools, so the welder works in short runs and re-checks the frame after each corner. Infill bars or panels are welded in only after the frame is stable, and the weld seams are ground flush where they will be visible or touched.

Surface Preparation and Protection

After welding, the door is cleaned of slag and spatter and the seams are ground. For exterior iron doors we use hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating, which protects the steel where the coating is most likely to be damaged, such as the frame corners. Aluminum doors are finished according to the chosen system. Surfaces are inspected for coating continuity before dispatch.

Delivery, Installation and Final Check

The finished door is delivered and fixed to the opening with anchors suited to the wall. Our installers check plumb, level and swing before fixing the final anchors, then test the lock, hinges and closing action. Gaps are sealed and the client is asked to confirm the installation against the approved drawing.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the iron door welding process take?

The duration depends on the size, design and finish of the door and on current workshop schedule. Your timeline is confirmed in writing after the drawing is approved.

Why is a site measurement needed before welding?

Walls are rarely perfectly square, so the door must be built to the actual opening. Measuring on site avoids fitting problems and rework at installation.

Can the welded seams be ground smooth?

Yes. Visible seams and contact points are ground flush and finished before coating, so the surface looks uniform and feels smooth to the touch.

Do you galvanize iron doors before painting?

For exterior doors we normally recommend hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coating for long-term corrosion protection. The exact system is set in the specification.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common error is welding a frame before confirming it is square, which locks distortion into the door. Another is skipping the written approval of the drawing, which leads to disagreements about size and finish after production has started.

Our recommendation

Ask for the drawing and the surface specification in writing before production, and confirm that the frame is checked on diagonals before final welding. These two steps catch most fabrication problems early.

Summary

A reliable iron door welding process combines accurate measurement, an approved drawing, controlled welding and proper surface protection, followed by careful installation.
