Powder Coating Process for Aluminum and Iron Doors

t418-19

t418-19

Powder coating is a dry paint applied electrically to a prepared door surface, then cured in an oven so it bonds into a hard, even finish. For iron doors the metal is cleaned and galvanized first, and for aluminum it is cleaned and pretreated, so the coating adheres well in both cases. The process runs from on-site measurement through color selection, production in our factory, finishing and installation.

Step 1: Measurement and Planning

Every door starts with an accurate measurement taken on site. We check the opening width and height, the frame, the swing direction, and the wall material, because these details decide how the door is built and how it will be fixed.

At this stage we also agree on the profile type, the glass or solid infill, and the surface you want. Choosing the finish early keeps the drawing and the production plan aligned, and avoids changes once the door is in the workshop.

Step 2: Choosing Color and Finish

Powder coating comes in a wide range of colors, from classic RAL shades to matte, satin and textured effects. Look at the color in daylight and next to the stone, wood or plaster it will sit against, since screens often show colors differently from real materials.

  • Matte finishes hide small marks and dust well.
  • Glossy finishes reflect light and show surface flaws more clearly.
  • Textured finishes suit iron doors in outdoor settings.

Step 3: Surface Preparation

The coating is only as good as the surface beneath it. Iron doors are cleaned to remove oil, rust and mill scale, and are then hot-dip galvanized to protect against corrosion. Aluminum is degreased and pretreated so the powder bonds firmly to the metal.

Skipping or rushing this stage is the most common cause of peeling or early wear, so we treat it as a fixed step rather than an optional one.

Step 4: Electrostatic Application and Curing

In the spray booth the powder is charged electrically and attracted to the grounded door, which lets it cover edges and corners evenly. The part then goes into a curing oven, where the powder melts and cross-links into a continuous, durable film.

Thickness and curing time are controlled for each batch, so the color and finish stay consistent across all the parts of the same door and across the whole project.

Step 5: Quality Check and Delivery to Site

After curing, each door is inspected for color match, coverage, gloss and any surface defects. Parts are checked against the approved drawing before they leave the factory, so you receive exactly the color and specification you approved.

Doors are then packed carefully to protect the finish during transport, since powder-coated surfaces can be scratched by rough handling on the way to the building.

Step 6: Installation and Aftercare

Installation is carried out by our team, which fixes the frame and hardware without damaging the finish. Protective film is removed only when work around the door is complete, to avoid scuffs during construction.

For care, wash the door with mild soapy water and a soft cloth, avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents, and rinse with clean water. Routine cleaning keeps the finish looking good for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is powder coating suitable for outdoor iron doors?

Yes. Powder coating on galvanized iron is a common choice for exterior doors because it resists weather and corrosion well. Ask us to confirm the right system for your location and exposure.

Can I choose any color for my door?

You can choose from our available powder coating range, including standard and special shades. We recommend viewing samples in daylight before deciding, since screen colors can differ from the final result.

Why does the color look slightly different from the sample?

Gloss level, lighting and the material underneath all affect how a color appears. Requesting a physical sample of the exact finish helps you judge the color accurately before production.

How long does the process take?

Timing depends on the door size, the finish selected and the current production schedule. We confirm the timeline with you after the drawing and specification are approved.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is choosing a color from a phone screen without seeing the finish in daylight, and another is skipping surface preparation to save time. Both lead to disappointing results that are hard to fix later.

Our recommendation

Choose the finish and color together with the stone, paint or wood it will sit next to, and always view a physical sample before approving the drawing. Matte textured finishes are a practical choice for exterior iron doors that see frequent sun and rain.

Summary

Powder coating is a multi-step process of measurement, color selection, careful surface preparation, electrostatic application, curing, quality checks and professional installation. Approving the finish early and viewing real samples gives you a door that looks right and lasts.
